Essay vs Facebook – The never ending war

I just received an email from friend, who at this moment, is struggling to tear himself away from the amazing (and time consuming) hobby of Facebooking – if that is not a word yet, then I am sure it soon will be!

So how does one beat Facebook?

Here are three suggestions:
1. Go back to the Stone Age: take a pen and a piece of refill. Sit down with all your research and write the way your parents had to.

2. Kill your internet: without internet, Facebook (and any other online distractions…) will have no power over you. Print off all of your research, sit at your laptop, and type. No Facebook until you’re done!

3. Use positive reinforcement (good ol’ PSYCH 203): write one paragraph, then reward yourself with 5 minutes of Facebook. Then write another followed by the Facebook reward, and so on, until you’re done. Any other suitable reward works just as well. Personally I choose this option, and eat lots of chocolate!

So what do you do to prevent essay procrastination?

    2. killing internet – it does work! I do it when I’m studying and it just makes you focus so much more on your study rather than on facebook/youtube/mangafox/gmail etc etc. Too bad most of the things you need to study for uni can’t be printed off 😦 e.g. myaccountinglab

holy shit i didn’t expect such a serious reply.

the best solution i think, not discrediting ur post… is probably to get a trusted friend to change your password( preferably a friend that will not post random/inappropriate status updates). But life without facebook is like red bull without caffeine.

Haha, ask and you shall receive…

That is also a good idea. Though if you can’t go that far (we are constantly told never to give out our precious passwords to anyone), just having someone to keep you accountable and check up on you can help. Indeed accountability can help in overcoming all sorts of bad habits.

Haha nice thought (though not exactly practical!), but what we are aiming for is self control. As we are taught in PSYCH 203, “it seems that explicitly reinforcing self control does increase self control now, but it leaves no lasting effect when extra reinforcement is discontinued.” (from the awesome PSYCH 203 Coursebook)

So what would happen, is we would quickly run out of money paying you guys for producing fantastic paragraphs. This would mean the future paragraphs you write wouldn’t be reinforced, and the self control of writing your essay now and Facebooking later, would be lost.

In conclusion, paying students $10 for writing paragraphs is not a good idea!

Came across this article: “Facebook use can lower grades by 20 percent, study says” more reason to take a break from it when you are try to write your essay!
